Manchester Cancer Research Centre
The Manchester Cancer Research Centre (MCRC) was formed in 2005 when the Cancer Research UK (CRUK) Paterson Research Institute, based at Christie Hospital, joined the University of Manchester. The centre co-ordinates cancer research strategy across Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences, Faculty of Life Sciences and NHS Trusts in the region.
This is an attempt to build on their internationally renowned strengths and allow strategic development of their work to have an even greater impact on cancer research. It aims to double cancer research activity and significantly increase funding from £30m to £60m per year.
The hub of the centre is at the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research site, adjacent to the Christie Hospital in Withington, to help promote close interaction between those:
- Dedicated to basic research into the causes and progression of cancer
- Involved with the translation of new knowledge into novel treatments
- Who provide state-of-the-art patient care
Research programmes
The Centre will have a multi-disciplinary approach and research programmes that will include:
- Existing work on breast cancer
- Paediatric cancer
- Cell proliferations, death and genome stability
- Experimental cancer therapeutics
- Tumour microenvironment
New research programmes are likely to include:
- Other disease-focused programmes
- Radiation related research
- Chemical biology
