Professor shon Lewis

Shôn Lewis has been Professor of Adult Psychiatry at the University since 1994 and is now Head of the School of Community-Based Medicine. He trained clinically at the Maudsley Hospital and began his research career at the Institute of Psychiatry, London, with Robin Murray, on neurodevelopmental factors in schizophrenia.

He was Head of the School of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences in Manchester 1998-2002, chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ research committee 1996-2001, council member of the British Association of Psychopharmacology 1999-2002, established the European First Episode Psychosis Network in 1996 and was board member of the International Early Psychosis Association 2000-2005. He was a member of the Wellcome Trust Neurosciences and Mental Health Panel 1998-2001 and has been a member of the Medical Research Council Neurosciences and Mental Health Board and the Cross-board Clinical Trials group since 2005.

He is joint Director of the Stanley Medical Institute International Research Centre (Manchester), R&D Director of Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust and Associate Director of the UK Mental Health Research Network.

Shôn's research interests focus on risk factors and interventions in early psychosis. He is chief investigator on the MRC clinical e-science grant in early psychosis (PsyGrid).

He was elected to the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2007.
