Professor Karen Luker, Dean of the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work

Professor Luker became Head in 1999. She also leads the Adult long-term conditions and self care research programme.

Professor Luker is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and of the Queen’s Nursing Institute. She has served on a wide range of national and international research committees, including MRC Health Services and Public Health Research Board. She is a member of the HEFCE 2008 RAE Panel for Nursing and Midwifery and in 2006 was appointed as a member of the Health Panel for the New Zealand Performance-Based Review of Research. She is a Non-Executive Director of Bolton, Salford and Trafford Mental Health NHS Trust, and edits the journal Health and Social Care in the Community published by Blackwell Publishing.

As Head, Professor Luker is responsible for providing academic leadership within the School and together with senior colleagues is responsible for the strategic direction of the School and its prudent financial management. The School is committed to high-quality teaching and research and is currently the top nursing school in the UK. The School aspires to increase its research performance and reputation to compete with the strongest schools worldwide.
