Professor John Playle

As well as Faculty Associate Dean for External Affairs and Communications, John is Professor of Mental Health Nursing in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work at The University.

He has worked clinically in a range of hospital and primary care settings, was elected Chair of Mental Health Nurse Academics UK 2006-2009 and has been external academic advisor for the Prison Service for a number of years. A key member of national policy and education steering groups, he has made substantial contributions to national policy guidance and provided consultancy to NHS Trusts and other organisations in the UK and abroad.

He has an extensive record of publications and is co-editor of a highly successful core Mental Health Nursing text book. He has undertaken a range of research and was one of the lead researchers on the Department of Health funded systematic review of Users and Carers views which informed the 2006 Mental Health Nursing review in England and Scotland and the recent Department of Health national study examining implementation of the CNO Review in Mental Health Trusts and Universities in England. He sits on the Nursing and Midwifery Council steering group responsible for the re-design of the pre-registration Nursing education framework for implementation from 2011/12 and is part of the National MPET funding review committee.

As a key member of the Faculty Senior Management Team has key responsibility for liaison with a wide range of existing external partners including the NHS and other organisations as well as overseeing and developing new partnerships at Regional, National and International level. He also has a key role in driving forward the Faculty strategy around communication, social responsibility and wider community engagement.
