Professor Iain Mackie

Professor Mackie was appointed Head of School for Dentistry in January 2010, having completed his second stint of 5 years as Director of Undergraduate Dental Education and 3 years as the Faculty Lead for Quality Assurance in Teaching and Learning.

Professor Mackie came to the University of Manchester, School of Dentistry in 1983. He gained internal promotion to Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry in 1991. He has built up a national and international reputation for his work on the management of traumatised teeth in children. This work was recognised by his election to President of the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry in 1998. In addition to his clinical work and research he has remained a very active teacher and was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy in 2004. Promotion to Professional Teaching Fellow followed in 2005.

As Head of School of Dentistry Professor Mackie has overall responsibility for ensuring that the School remains in the forefront of teaching learning and research for Dentistry in the United Kingdom. The School of Dentistry was the top rated School for research in the 2008 RAE and has consistently been in the top three places of UK Schools of Dentistry for teaching and learning. The School has thriving undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes which continue to evolve and meet the challenges and needs for the future.
